Jones, Darren A. - Class of 1999

While enrolled in Oak Brook, Darren worked for Home School Legal Defense Association (www.hslda.org) as a legal assistant to Dewitt T. Black, III. His responsibilities included counseling clients on the telephone, tracking and analyzing legislation in 21 states, and acting as a legal secretary for Black.

After passing the California Bar Exam on his first attempt in February 2000, Darren was hired as an attorney by HSLDA. Initially, he functioned as a contact attorney, which involved corresponding with superintendents, social workers, and truancy officers, as well as assisting state organizations with legislative battles. He initiated a project to develop homeschooling forms suitable for use in each state, and he was heavily involved in writing news articles for the website. Since December 2001, he works as a Litigation Attorney under Mike Farris and Jim Mason. In June 2002, he attended a weeklong Trial Advocacy course presented by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. His first court appearance was on August 20, 2002, when he successfully convinced a judge to allow a family to begin homeschooling over the objections of Child Protective Services.

Darren is married to Sara (Roberts) Jones, a former intern with HSLDA from Mississippi. They have two daughters, Adelaide and Daphne, and two sons, Stuart and Phillip. They currently reside in Stephens City, Virginia.
